Launching Today - The Renters Reform Coalition
Advice for Renters are proud to be a founding member of The Renters Reform Coalition
Security, Safety and a just housing system. It doesn’t sound too much to ask does it?
Yet for millions for Renters, this Christmas - like all year round - is a time of wondering how long their tenancy will last.
Will the landlord decide to sell his/her property and want me out so he can get a higher sale price?
What if I lose my job and miss a rent payment while waiting for my Universal Credit claim to be assessed?
Do I dare ask the landlord to get the boiler serviced, or to clear the Autumn leaves that have blocked the gutter, causing damp in my daughter’s bedroom?
How can we call ourselves a civilised society when tenants face such questions every day?
The answer is that we can’t, and that’s why Advice for Renters is joining with other organisations who care about private renters the way we do, to form the Renters Reform Coalition to address this.
After all, the Government did say that they would get rid of the infamous No Fault Possession procedure in their election manifesto, so all they need to do now is to implement the legislation that so many people voted for. Almost all the other political parties supported this too, so there won’t be much opposition to it, once the legislation is drafted and discussed in parliament.
Indeed, our new Renters Reform Coalition will be on hand to assist this process, coming up with helpful suggestions to make sure that the law provides lasting improvements for the private rented sector.
With security of tenure, tenants will be able to exercise their existing tenancy rights without fear of eviction, and the worst landlords will have to up their game or sell to someone more responsible.
We’ll be coming back with further news about the Coalition in the New Year, and letting you know how you can support the Coalition’s programme for change.
