Closure of Advice for Renters
It is with great sadness that we announce the closure of Advice for Renters after more than 30 years of service to the community.
The legal aid system has made it increasingly difficult for small specialist advice organisations like ours to continue operating. During the pandemic, temporary protections for renters led to a significant decrease in client numbers, and although demand for advice has returned, anticipated legal reforms mean the landscape for advice provision is changing once again and we must accept we lack the resources to be able to adapt.
Like many small charities, adapting to the increasing digitalisation of casework, billing, and service delivery placed significant strain on our resources. Despite every effort to modernise processes, the cumulative pressures proved too great.
We are proud of the work we achieved over decades of service, including money advice initiatives and expanding our community presence during the pandemic. Although these new projects did not meet their original ambitions, they reflected our commitment to respond to emerging needs.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our funders, supporters, volunteers, and — above all — the tenants and residents we have been privileged to serve. We are pleased to share that Brent Council remain committed to the Tenant Support Service and will be rolling out the new in-house initiative in the coming weeks.
Advice for Renters has always stood for fairness, dignity, and justice in housing. We trust that our legacy will continue in the work of others who share these values.
